Macintosh OS

NeXTSTEP 1.0

NeXTSTEP was originally developed by NeXT for their line of computers including the NeXTcube. Based on the Mach kernel and BSD, NeXT was designed as an object-oriented, multitasking operating system. NeXTSTEP 1.0 was released in 1989 and included a large media library complete with the Merriam Webster's dictionary and the Complete Works of William Shakespeare.

NeXTSTEP 2.0

Released on September 18, 1990, NeXTSTEP 2.0 added support for the NeXTstation, NeXTcube, floppy disk, CD-ROM, fax modems, and color graphics. The file manager was further refined for improved navigation, and the old "Black Hole" trash can was replaced with the new "Recycler". Also included was a new terminal application and support for MS-DOS formatted floppy disks.

NeXTSTEP 3.0

NeXTSTEP 3.0 was released on September 8, 1992. Over the next few years, NeXTSTEP 3.x would see many enhancements such as full color desktop icons and background, international settings, support for HFS, AppleTalk, and NetWare, and offical releases for i386, PA-RISC, and SPARC systems. NeXT would ultimately be acquired by Apple on February 7, 1997, and NeXTSTEP would go on to become the foundation of Mac OS X.
